Components of the SkillsActive Group

With the development of the National Skills Academy for Sport and Active Leisure as a subsidiary charity of SkillsActive, we have moved towards a new group structure for the organisation.

SkillsActive (parent charity)

SkillsActive is the authority for skills in the sector with employers, government and stakeholders. As the parent organisation in the Group, SkillsActive will lead the strategic development of the Group and focus its own resources on the core SSC role:

  • Ensuring employer leadership and engagement
  • Consultation and representation of the Sector voice
  • Maintaining robust labour market analysis
  • Maintaining up to date national occupational standards
  • Ensuring a supply of relevant training and qualifications to meet Sector needs and standards

SkillsActive is now structured in three Directorates:          

  • Group Services Directorate – providing central services to the Group and co-ordinating the strategic and policy lead;
  • Employer Engagement and Partnerships Directorate – ensuring a 4 nation approach to consulting and representing employer needs;
  • Technical Services Directorate – managing the development of the core products of LMI, standards and qualification development and reform.

National Skills Academy for Sport and Active Leisure (Subsidiary Charity)

The NSA was formally approved by LSC process in May 2008, became operational in July, launched first hubs in October and is in the first year of its 3 year development programme. The NSA will provide a one-stop shop for employers, employees and potential recruits to the industry to access the SSC approved qualifications, training and advice needed to support business and career development.

The NSA is structured in the following components:

  • Online Academy – serving individuals and employer members. The on-line academy will be become the focus for on-line sales and services for the Group.
  • National Hub – serving national employers and organisations
  • Regional Hubs:
    Phase 1 – London, Yorkshire & Humberside, North West;
    Phase 2 – South East, South West, East;
    Phase 3 – East Midlands, West Midlands, North East.
  • National support Team

SkillsActive Services Ltd (Trading Subsidiary)

As SkillsActive’s trading subsidiary, SAS Ltd will be the focus for the development and delivery of commercial products and services and marketing for the Group, ensuring consistent branding and acting as a focus for shared activity. SAS will generate income and surplus for the charities.

SAS will become the focus for the on-going development of this range of products and services to meet employer skills needs, whilst marketing and selling current products such as the Active Passport. SAS will also develop brand recognition across the Group along with co-ordinating an integrated membership structure. The Register of Exercise Professionals (REPs) is also operated within SAS and REPs will be used as a model to explore the development of professional registers within the sector where there is demand.
