Why is the active leisure and learning sector important?

The active leisure and learning sector contributes some £8.6 billion to the UK economy, outperforming other sectors and growing at almost twice the rate as the rest of the economy. The sector employs over 634,000 people, as well as nearly two million volunteers.

Whilst the sector focuses to an extent on leisure and recreation, each of the five sub-sectors has great social impact, and the active leisure and learning sector is at the heart of the government’s initiative to improve communities and promote healthy lifestyles, including the drive to combat obesity.

Each sub-sector has its own mixture of employee requirements, skills issues and specialist functions that make the correct provision of training and skills crucial to its success.

The announcement of London’s successful bid for the 2012 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games has put the UK’s sporting provision – both competitive and recreational – in the spotlight as never before. Ensuring that the UK uses the build-up to and the legacy of the Games to its maximum potential will be wholly dependent on a dramatic increase in the paid and volunteer workforce in the sector.
