Public take the London 2012 open weekend challenge

26 Jul

Miriam Farley - 26/07/10

Over the weekend 'open weekends' were held throughout the UK to mark two years to the day until the London 2012 Games begin.

With the fresh theme of ‘challenge yourself’, over 900 events took place across the UK as part of the Cultural Olympiad. Organisations set public challenges at each of their events, creating an opportunity for everyone to set a new personal best by trying something new or taking an existing interest to the next level.

Miriam at the Wandsworth Festival in Battersea Park. One of the 900 events taking place as part of the London 2012 Open weekend. I attended and assisted an event which took place in Wandsworth at Battersea Park. Here we set up three challenges for the public where they could either run, cycle or row 2012 meters! It was a brilliant day and London 2012 mascot Mandeville showed up to meet the participants. It really was a chance for people to feel a part of London 2012 Games.

Seb Coe, London 2012 Chair, said of the weekend: "Open Weekend will lead the nation into the two-year countdown to the start of the London 2012 Games with new personal bests being set right across the UK."

So the count down is now on! With 732 days until the Games begins how are you going to Challenge yourself?! Let us know in the comments section below. As I mentioned last week, one way could be through volunteering at the games!
