Introduction

There are over 200 different job roles to choose from in the active leisure and learning sector. Jobs are as diverse as:

  • referee or umpire
  • personal trainer
  • gym receptionist
  • children's playscheme coordinator
  • after school play assistant
  • outdoor activity leader
  • caravan park manager
  • lifeguard
  • volunteer sports club coordinator.

Active leisure and learning is a very popular sector to work in. Over 26% of young people list it as the place where they'd like to pursue a full time career.

There are over 5.8 million volunteers working in unpaid positions in England alone.

However, before embarking on a career in the sector it is important to understand the day-to-day realities of such roles.

For example, the majority of people pursue their leisure activities in the evenings and at weekends. Some jobs are likely to involve working unsociable hours, in customer focused environments and possibly on a shift basis.

Pay levels are often at a lower level than counterparts working in other sectors.

Despite these realities the sector remains popular and competitive, and is an extremely exciting and rewarding place to develop a career.
