National
Vocational Qualifications (NVQ) and
Scottish Vocational Qualifications (SVQ)
are work-related, competence based qualifications
which are obtained through a combination
of practical assessment which takes
place in the workplace and college-based
work. They reflect the skills and knowledge
needed to do a job effectively, and
show that a candidate is competent in
the area of work the S/NVQ represents.
You are most likely to achieve these
through being employed and issued day
or block release to college. There are
no formal exams involved in NVQ/SVQ
attainment - overall competence is assessed
and you can complete an S/NVQ as a full-time
or a part-time 'sandwich' course. In
the active leisure and learning sector
there are many S/NVQs available at Levels
1-4 in areas including playwork, coaching
teaching and instructing, spectator
control, instructing exercise and fitness,
operational services and activity leadership.
The main SkillsActive website offers
an extensive list of National Occupational
Standards and S/NVQs which are available

Vocational Qualifications in Scotland
differ in title and structure. They
are broken down into units that are
assigned credit, which are included
in the Scottish
Credit and Qualifications Framework
(SCQF).
