- SKILLSACTIVECAREERS OFFICIALLY LAUNCHED |
SkillsActive, the Sector Skills
Council for Active Leisure and Learning
officially launched its careers information
and guidance service this week at SkillCity
in London.
Covering sport
and recreation, health and fitness,
playwork, the outdoors and caravan industries,
SkillsActiveCareers offers comprehensive
advice on how to enter the sector, what
courses to take and qualifications to
aim for; how to progress through the
sector, highlighting career pathways;
and offering guidance on transferable
skills.
SkillCity 2005, the UK's biggest ever
national interactive careers and training
event for young people, held this week
at the ExCel exhibition centre in London's
Docklands proved the perfect opportunity
to launch the SkillsActiveCareers service,
with thousands of visitors aged between
12 and 30 passing through its doors
to uncover the wealth of skills-based
career opportunities that vocational
training has to offer.
There are over 200 different job roles
to choose from in the active leisure
and learning sector, with over 5.8 million
volunteers already working in unpaid
positions. From personal trainer, gym
manager, playworker, outdoor activity
leader, sports development officer and
tennis coach, the sector offers interesting
and varied careers.
SkillsActive’s entry to the workforce
manager Stephen Mitchell said; “Some
school and college leavers don’t
consider working in the sector as a
viable career option. They make the
common mistake of only considering certain
roles – the professional footballer
or personal trainer – and do not
see the bigger picture.
“Employers in the sector are equally
keen to recruit staff that are adaptable
and enthusiastic and have had some work
or industry experience, such as activity
leadership, sports coaching or pool
lifeguarding.
“SkillsActive is working in partnership
with employers in the sector to shape
the qualification frameworks that make
up the courses available in colleges
and universities. This involves asking
what employers require their current
and future employees to have in terms
of qualifications and training; this
way, students can graduate college and
university and be vocationally ready
for employment.
“SkillsActiveCareers is a great
opportunity for people wanting to enter
into the sector to get the advice they
need to work in one of the most vibrant,
exciting and rewarding sectors in the
UK.”
