Coaching
is central to the development of sport
at every level and is a key area addressed
within ‘Climbing Higher’-
the Welsh Assembly Government’s
Strategy for sport and recreation. The
Sports Council for Wales’ Coaching
Plan will also focus on the development
of the UK Coaching Certificate (UKCC)
across the nation. The UKCC will build
on the good practice that already exists
within governing bodies of sport’s
coaching structures and will ensure
the equivalence of each level of coaching
qualifications across all sports; SkillsActive
is the endorsement agency for the UKCC.
SkillsActive is currently setting up
a Welsh office of the Register of Exercise
Professionals (REPs). REPs in Wales
will be able to offer more relevant
advice to members, as well as communicate
in Welsh. The existence of the Register
will also help to create a professional,
trustworthy image for the health and
fitness industry in Wales. SkillsActive
will also form part of the new fitness
development organization for Wales-Exercise
Development Wales.
SkillsActive has established a link
with the North West Wales Outdoor Recreation
Partnership and Snowdonia Active, a
group of outdoor industry business people.
The Welsh Development Agency funded
a research project ‘The Active
Economy’ which has provided SkillsActive
with information about the skills needs
in the outdoors industry.
SkillsActive works with CITO, the British
Homes and Holiday Parks Association
and caravan employers to promote and
improve training and qualifications
in the caravan industry.
SkillsActive works closely with Play
Wales to promote and develop playwork
education and training.
