PATHWAYS : Elite Performance
Becoming an athlete is a dream for many of us but only a reality for a very small minority. The dedication, passion and of course talent required to be a professional athlete are not qualities that can be learnt and it is for this reason that a career as an athlete, for example as a footballer, tennis player or gymnast is very often not a feasible career choice.

It is also very important for aspiring athletes to obtain training and qualifications to allow them to fall back into another career of their choice should their livelihood be cut short due to injury or inability to reach the highest levels of performance. Part of this strand would include the people that support athletes in making them the best possible performers which includes physiotherapists, psychologists and dieticians.

The Talented Athlete Scholarship Scheme, or TASS as it is better known, is a Government funded programme that represents a unique partnership between sport and higher and further education. The programme awards Scholarships and Bursars to talented athletes that are committed to combining their sport and education. It aims to reduce the drop out of talented athletes from sport and supports and develops the talent of today for sporting success in the future. For more information visit www.tass.gov.uk

For more information about sports performance and athlete development pathways as well as the English Institute of Sport – please visit www.UKSport.gov.uk . Each individual National Governing Body of Sport across the UK will have their own player development and talent identification pathways, so please see the links section to find the sport of your choice.
