Coaching
in sport can be with beginners
to elite performers, the young
and old, and
people with disabilities. From
being a Sunday morning volunteer
at the local sports club, to a
retired athlete looking for continued
involvement in the game, coaching
will develop participants’
enthusiasm and enjoyment of sport
and physical activity.
Coaches help people participating
in sports to work towards achieving
their full potential. They may
support professional sportspeople,
sports teams, community teams
or school groups. Whatever the
context, coaching involves ensuring
the best physical, psychological
and practical conditions to allow
participants to give their best
performance. Coaches work closely
with individuals and groups to
help them fully develop their
abilities. They identify the needs
of the individual or the team,
and plan and implement suitable
training programmes. The role
demands good interpersonal skills
and a strong interest in helping
others to succeed. Many instructors/coaches
have dual roles, combining coaching
with other, often full-time, jobs.

"The
UKCC indicates the Government's
intention to improve the quality
and standing of coaching, which
will be vital to the development
of sport and individuals."
Each
individual Governing Body of Sport
will have their own coach training
and education system as well as
their own development pathway
from grass roots coach to world
class and national coach. Please
see individual NGB websites to
find out more about how to get
involved in coaching within your
chosen sport.
There
are an increasing number of opportunities
available within sports coaching,
particularly at community level,
and the recent Government initiative
to recruit and deploy 3,000 Community
Sports Coaches has seen an increase
in the number of active coaches
who deliver coaching in schools,
clubs and community projects.
