What it’s all about

Event or facility based stewards play an essential role in ensuring the health and safety of members of the general public and staff at sporting and recreational events, helping to avert major incidents.

After the Hillsborough disaster, SkillsActive worked with the Football Licensing Authority to develop National Occupational Standards (NOS) which form the basis for qualifications in Spectator Safety at levels 2, 3 and 4.  Since the introduction of the Spectator NVQs, we have seen an increase in the number of people undertaking the qualification, but we don’t know whether this leads to paid work or opportunities to volunteer at sporting and recreational events.  It’s also important for us to hear from employers and volunteer co-ordinators about the key skills required in core stewarding and spectator safety roles.

Who should take part?

Given SkillsActive’s role in developing qualifications to meet industry needs, we would like to hear your views on the appropriateness and quality of training provision, and the barriers to learning and development that you face.  We would like the most senior person responsible for Spectator Safety to complete this online survey.  With such a wide range of sporting events and stadia, it is really important that we hear from as many sporting facilities, event venues and stadium as possible to get an accurate picture of stewarding experiences and requirements.
