The panel advises SkillsActive on the technical content of submissions and plays a role in quality assuring the delivery of training, which is then ultimately recognised by Register of Exercise Professionals and employers.
This panel, which includes employers, training providers, Higher Education, and industry experts, advises SkillsActive on the technical content of submissions and plays a role in quality assuring the delivery of training, which is then ultimately recognised by employers in the sector. The aims of this panel is to review policy, set standards and look to advise SkillsActive on new National Occupational Standards that look to support the needs of both the medical and fitness sectors.
It also comments on the technical content of submissions and plays a role in the quality assuring the delivery of recognised training.

SkillsActive and the Nancy Ovens Trust expect applicants to create and tailor their training to develop new and improved skills for use in their current role.
Previous successful applicants have used the bursary to take their careers to a new level by working with highly experienced individuals in their field, such as elite coaches, or by gaining experience in a new industry setting.
All training should be undertaken outside of an individual’s day to day role.
Applications for the Nancy Ovens bursary 2012 are now closed.
Find out more about some of our previous bursars:
Nancy Ovens MBE was a board member of SkillsActive’s predecessor organisation SPRITO and an enthusiastic supporter of education, training and skills development in the sector. Nancy championed work-based skills development in sport and leisure and helped make major improvements to services.
Nancy’s family, friends and colleagues established the Nancy Ovens Trust after she passed away to celebrate her work with young people.
Visit the Nancy Ovens Trust website to learn more about the trust.

Find out more about the various progression pathways available in playwork that can help you build successful careers working with children and young adults.
People wishing to undertake the level 3 Award in Transition to Playwork (from early years) must have achieved a level 3 early years qualification based on either the early years, care and education standards or the children's care, learning and development standards. Accepted entry qualifications include the level 3 NVQ in Children's Care, Learning and Development, the level 3 NVQ Early Years, Care and Education and the level 3 NVQ in Childcare and Education. From July 2012, this also includes the level 3 Diploma for the Children and Young People's Workforce (early years pathway) and the NNEB.
The new QCF level 2, level 3 and level 4/5 qualifications including the Diploma (NVQ) are now available and have replaced the NQF qualifications
Once registered, candidates usually have 3 years to complete their qualification and claim certification, but this depends on the awarding organisation, so those registered on NQF qualifications will still have time to complete. For those who have already achieved an NVQ in playwork, the good news is that it will continue to be accepted as ‘full and relevant’ for practice in early years and childcare registered settings.
During the development of the level 5 Diploma in Playwork (NVQ) it was agreed that some units of the level 4 playwork national occupational standards (on which it is based) were describing knowledge and skills at level 5. As a result, we developed a level 4 Award in Playwork, a level 4 Certificate in Playwork but a level 5 Diploma in Playwork (NVQ).
On the basis of this development, we have agreed that the Level 4 NVQ in Playwork, not now available for registration, can be deemed a level 5 NVQ in Playwork for purposes of transferability and progression. In Northern Ireland, this means that playworkers who have achieved the level 4 NVQ in Playwork can consider themselves qualified to level 5 for social services registration and inspection purposes.
SkillsActive believes that training providers delivering playwork training should have occupationally competent staff.
SkillsActive have recommend that:
SkillsActive released an EYFS briefing paper, which provides clarification on many areas that are of concern to play settings as well as help in the inspection process.
New EYFS practice guidance concerning holiday playschemes registered on the early years and/or childcare register now states they are required to employ staff with qualifications, rather than the playwork induction standard endorsed training.
While playwork induction standard endorsed courses are no longer accepted by Ofsted, it should be noted that these courses still make a valuable contribution to induction training for staff and volunteers who are new to the playwork sector.
If you have any more questions about the EYFS framework, you may find the answers in our EYFS FAQand for more information on the EYFS visit the DCSF website, although please note that information reflects previous government policy.
Ofsted are currently inspecting all settings registered on the early years register, which includes play provision which has children in the early years.
Ofsted released an important factsheet ‘regulating play-based provision’ which is essential reading for settings. It provides a clarification on many of the key areas of concern raised by play settings.
They have also updated two important documents, ‘Conducting early years inspections‘ and 'Requirements for the Childcare Register: childcare providers on nondomestic or domestic premises', which are available from their website and are essential updates.
