Outdoors endorsement proves that training and qualifications meet industry standards, so you can promote your courses as training of recognised high quality.

With so many training options out there, make your training stand out from the crowd by showing that it has been endorsed by the Sector Skills Council for the outdoors.

Endorsement overview

SkillsActive consults with industry groups to ensure that the endorsement options offered meet the needs of organisations in the industry. The endorsement process intends to ensure that all aspects of training offered, from technical content to the services provided to learners, are of the highest quality.

Continuing Professional Development

Continuing Professional Development (CPD) is very important for those working in active leisure, learning and well-being as it shows their skills are current and, for specific areas, provides them with the CPD points required to remain on a professional register, such as REPs.

Endorsement highlights the value of CPD and allows approved training providers to stand out from the crowd as offering training that is valuable, relevant and meets industry standards. Submitted endorsement applications are assessed by an endorsement panel, who will review all aspects carefully.

National Occupational Standards

SkillsActive works with partner organisations and experts to develop National Occupational Standards (NOS) across the active leisure, learning and well-being sector. The NOS establish the benchmark of competence required in the sector. Endorsement applications (except those for workshops and varied training) need to demonstrate that courses match these standards so that they are up to date and relevant to learners and potential employers.

Endorsed training does not need to cover all the breadth and depth of the national occupational standards, but may focus on a specific aspect or discipline.

Application timelines

SkillsActive operates a rolling endorsement system, which means training providers can submit their courses for endorsement whenever is most convenient.  From receipt of submission the endorsement process takes between 5-6 weeks to gain an initial decision; this will be an approval, a referral for additional information or a resubmission.

Please be aware that you should allow at least 12 weeks between submitting your application and delivering your first training session. This will allow time for any additional actions that may need to be completed in order to gain full approval. You will be given a detailed action plan to help complete this and 6 weeks to complete these actions. SkillsActive can not award retrospective approval of training so training should not advertised as endorsed or endorsement pending until you have been notified of approval.

FAQs - renewals

FAQs relating to training endorsement renewals for the Register of Exercise Professionals

Please also see our FAQs relating to general endorsement queries.

Why should I continue my endorsement?

Endorsed training for CPD can give the training provider many benefits as well as the candidate.

The piece of training achieves industry recognition, and will appear on the Register's literature and website.

Candidates who are on the Register can use the training as evidence of CPD in order to remain on the Register, therefore making your training more appealing to REP’s 28,000 members.

Endorsed training aims to raises the standard of delivery and assessments given the set criteria training providers have to meet, as well as helping to safeguard and regulate the industry.

As an approved endorsed training provider through SkillsActive, we can offer you support.  For example consultancy, general enquires, or help scoping out business opportunities to make the best of the training coming forward for endorsement.

What happens if I was endorsed before June 2009?

Please be aware since June 2009 the criteria changed for submissions, so you may want to read over the updated documentation if you have not already done so as this could affect the CPD points historically attributed to your training.

Hopefully you will find it a lot easier to follow, with clear evidence checklists of what we expect from submissions. Most of the evidence will have already been submitted, however there are additional sections that need to be completed.

Follow the relevant link to the evidence checklist for your training

What services do you have to help support me through this process?

We have two services which are useful when collating your additional evidence together.

Standardisation training days

The training day goes through how to get a submission approved and looks at other areas including assessment strategies, internal verification etc ensuring that you put forward a sound submission so that you might avoid being referred for further information and incur an additional cost. Look for upcoming dates on our events page.

SkillsActive consultancy

Alternatively, it might be an idea to take up the opportunity of an active consultant. They are able to take you through this process and give you in-depth knowledge surrounding Continued Professional Development and your application on a one-to-one basis.

If I have more then one piece of training do I need to send details in for each piece of CPD?

If you have more then one submission, or in the long run you think you may want to develop further training, then you may want to consider applying for the Training Provider licence.

The licence allows you to deliver an unlimited amount of training automatically endorsed for two years. You do not have to submit each piece of training individually and you will have access to adding dates and venues for all training under your licence without an additional charge. Information regarding the licence can be found on our training provider licence page.

As you met this criteria previously we would like you to continue to be part of this. We believe training providers need recognition as well as the individuals who are working within the industry.
