DKH Legacy Trust Char, Dame Kelly Holmes, welcomes the news that Sporting Champion Michaela Breeze has been named captain of the Welsh Team for the 2010 Commonwealth Games this October in New Delhi.
The reigning weightlifting Commonwealth Champion, who forms part of the 20 top world class athletes on Sport England's Sporting Champions programme, will round off her international sporting career by captaining a team of 174 Welsh athletes at the Games.
The Sporting Champions programme, owned by Sport England and Sport Unlimited but managed by DKH Legacy Trust in partnership with Creating Excellence, is designed for elite athletes to inspire and guide less active young people to take up a sport they enjoy for a fitter and healthier lifestyle.
Michaela Breeze said "When I was first asked to be captain, I was left totally speechless. It was a very emotional moment, and I still get choked up just thinking about it. To lead your country at a major international event like this is an amazing honour. I am so proud. For me, it will be the ultimate way to finish my career as an international weightlifter”
DKH Legacy Trust chair, Dame Kelly Holmes, said “I am extremely proud of the fact that a Sporting Champion, Michaela Breeze, has been handed the role of captain of the Welsh team at the Commonwealth Games.
“It’s great news for the thousands of young people benefitting from the Sporting Champions programme to have an athlete such as Michaela, mentoring and guiding them into a sport they enjoy as part of a healthy and active and lifestyle. She is great example of what hard work and sheer determination can achieve and I wish her and the Welsh team all the best at the Games.”
