Both of the Trade Bodies supporting the caravan industry have expressed profound relief at the decision to moderate initial plans to impose VAT at standard rate on the sale of caravan holiday homes. Following substantial concern at the undoubted economic impact, 77 MPs supported an early day motion against the proposals.
Rallying through BH&HPA and NCC to provide compelling evidence of the devastation that would have been caused throughout the supply chain, industry businesses should now express their appreciation of the considerable efforts of their MPs, who acted quickly and effectively to support the range of caravan businesses, many of them providing employment prospects in deprived areas.
The reduction to 5%, and the postponement of its introduction to April 2013, now makes it a manageable increase, allowing the industry to continue to provide a vital component of British tourism.
