DCSF announces £655m education fund

DCSF -19/06/09

The Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF) will provide the funding over a three year period in order to respond to unprecedented demand for places at English schools, colleges and with training providers.

It is hoped that the funding will contribute to the government's 'September Guarantee', which aims to provide a place in education and training for every 16 and 17-year-old who wants one, as well as ensuring that young people have the chance to acquire the necessary skills for the workplace.

An additional 72,000 funded places will be provided in September than had been previously predicted in November 2008, while a further 17,500 apprenticeships will also be available to young people.

Children's secretary Ed Balls said: "More young people than ever before are choosing to stay on in education and training and we are committed to ensuring they are able to do so.

"This £6.8bn investment, together with an extension of Education Maintenance Allowance, will reassure young people that their sixth form, college or training place will be protected and paid for by the Government."
