Lee Rowberry, SkillsActive - 16/06/09
The trophy match will take place at Hamburg Golf Club, Germany from 24-25 July.
Rachel (20) is one of seven new GB & I caps selected in the team. A player of great talent and potential, Rachel performs well on the big stage, having won the English Girls' Championship as well as the French Under-21 Championship. She also helped England finish seventh place at the World Amateur Team Championship for the Espirito Santo Trophy last year.
This season, Rachel was a close runner-up to Danielle McVeigh in the Welsh Open Stroke-Play Championship, was third qualifier in the English Championship and reached the last 32 in the Ladies' British Amateur Championship. She lost by one hole to Hannah Barwood, last year’s English Champion, in one of the best second-round ties at Harlech last week.
SkillsActive AASE programme manager, Stephen Mitchell, says: “The ultimate aim of the AASE programme is to support our young athletes in their quest to perform at the highest level in their chosen sport, so it’s great to see so many apprentices like Rachel being selected for national sides, winning national titles and performing well abroad.
“On behalf of SkillsActive, I’d like to congratulate Rachel on her selection for the Vagliano Trophy and wish her all the best for the tournament next month.”
The Vagliano Trophy is a biennial competition between the amateurs of GB & I and Europe and while the four matches from 1995 to 2001 resulted in wins for the Continent, GB & I reversed that trend in 2003 at County Louth with a narrow 12½ – 11½ win. It was last played in Scotland in 1999, at North Berwick.
