Outdoors projects

We lead on a range of projects within the outdoors sector, often in partnership with stakeholders. Please use the links below for more information on some of our current projects.

UK outdoor sector survey

The outdoor sector has long proved challenging to 'measure'. Despite the hurdles, SkillsActive promoted a UK-wide survey during 2009 to try and rectify the lack of data available to map the sector and its workforce. This information is vital when bidding for funding or when championing the sector and its value to society.

Results are now in and analysed, and key conclusions and considerations are available to read. Two versions of the report are available to download as PDFs. For those who wish to see the key findings, highlights and conclusions, the Outdoors survey 2009 summary document is available. The full Outdoors survey 2009 report is also available for downloading.

CLO2 European outdoor project

At a European level, outdoor employers have never mutually agreed the functions and competences they require of staff, nor has a bridge ever been established between these requirements and the vocational and educational training provided by training bodies. The absence of a pan-European qualification mechanism has not helped this situation.

This Leonardo funded project aims to build these links through a set of agreed standards for a typical outdoor ‘animator’ (activity leader/ instructor). Training providers can then align their programmes to the employer-supported standards, which in turn will aid worker mobility across Europe.

The CLO2 project website has further information on the project.
