What is Playwork?

Playwork offers play opportunities, it is what children and young people do when they follow their own ideas and interests in their own way for it’s own sake with not necessarily any external goal or reward.

Playworkers are adults;

Who deeply respect children and young people and their right to play with as little adult intervention as possible
Who are keenly observant and responsive to children and young peoples needs
Whose primary function is to enhance children and young peoples play by helping to regularly create and resource a variety of play spaces offering all types of play.

Playworkers work in a range of settings, both statutory and voluntary, which aims to provide for children’s play, such as adventure playgrounds, breakfast clubs, playschemes and out-of-school clubs. They sometimes may work in other specialised settings such as prisons, detention centres, hospitals, in which providing play has been recognised as an important way of supporting children.

How do I sign up to the SkillsActive Code of Practice?

The SkillsActive Code of Practice is a quality award for Training Providers who offer Playwork courses. You need to produce evidence to show how you meet a set of criteria including; occupational competence of trainers, information provided to course participants, policies and procedures etc. If you would like to apply, contact Kiran at SkillsActive kiran.sahota@skillsactive.com

I am a training provider, and want to get endorsement for a training course I'm running. How do I go about this?

First you'll need to gain the Code of Practice (see above), although you can submit both applications at the same time. To find out about submitting a course for endorsement, contact your regional supporting officer (visit the regional sites to find out contact details). They will provide you with advice and all the relevant paperwork.
