Consultation Opportunity
SkillsActive has been working with employers over the past 2 years on a single qualification structure designed to support the key common roles that operate in leisure centres, sports centres and fitness facilities. For each role a qualification exists that consist of learning units of ‘common content’ i.e. a single qualification that can be offered by a number of awarding organisations. So far, there are now established qualifications supporting the roles of:
- Fitness Instructor
- Exercise to Music Instructor
- Aqua Instructor
- Exercise Referral Instructor
- Personal Trainer
- Lifeguard
- Recreation Assistant
- Duty Manager
The next phase of this work involves qualification development to support:
- Customer service/front of house roles
- Centre Manager
- Sport Development Officer/Manager
This structure has been developed through joint working with employers, first of all (and in most cases) to work up ‘Occupational Descriptors’, i.e. generic job descriptions of what people at each level do in the leisure industry, and then analysing what types of qualifications might be appropriate.
The principle qualification outcomes of this work will appear on the Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF). The QCF applies to England, Wales and Northern Ireland. The QCF is not applicable to Scotland and SkillsActive will work with partners in Scotland to ensure equivalent qualification solutions are in place.
There is now an opportunity for those working in the sector to contribute to the development of this framework. To participate in this consultation, please download
