Personal Best

Personal Best is a training and volunteer programme using London 2012 as a motivating force to help people furthest from employment into long term, sustainable jobs.

Inspired By London 2012

"I would definitely recommend the programme. It opened my eyes to a lot of things about working with the general public"

Lucia, Personal Best graduate

The Programme uses the prospect of becoming a Games Time Volunteer in 2012 as an inspiration to attract eligible people to undertake a Level 1 qualification, experience some volunteering and ultimately to move into employment or further training.

Those that take part in the Programme will receive guidance in training for a qualification and support in their volunteering experience, all of which help as 'stepping stones' toward a new work opportunity or further training. Ultimately, the goal of the Programme is to give people new skills and employment opportunities and raise self esteem and self confidence.

About the project and our role

Personal Best has been set up as a partnership programme by the Learning and Skills Council (LSC), Mayor of London, Job Centre Plus and the London Development Agency (LDA). We have a lead role to play in the Personal Best programme as Sector Skills Council for Active Leisure and Learning for a number of reasons.

We are the lead SSC for volunteering (due to the 5 million plus volunteers currently active in sport and leisure), with the responsibility for sporting performance and using sport as a tool for re-engagement.

We are also the lead SSC for progressing the qualification, as part of the new unit based Qualifications and Credit Framework, so we are working with awarding bodies to approve their individual applications.

As part of the project, we also have an additional role to play around the provision of Skills for Life training, quality careers advice for the sector, the approval and kite marking of quality provision through the National Skills Academy, and the provision of the skills passport for the sector - activepassport.
