Playwork Learning and Skills Strategy Consultation

SkillsActive has launched a consultation on its UK strategy for playwork, education, training and qualifications - Playwork Learning and Skills Strategy 2011–2016 - and is urging the playwork sector to get involved.

It follows our first playwork strategy Quality Training, Quality Play (QTQP), which is founded on the principle of Article 31 of the UN Convention of the Rights of the Child, recognising play as a right and being fundamental to children’s quality of life.

Our draft strategy can be found here while our vision, aims and objectives for the next 5 year strategy are:

Vision

A skilled and qualified playwork workforce, underpinned by the Playwork Principles, providing high quality play opportunities for all children and young people

Aims

Services for children and young people have been rapidly changing across the UK. Playwork is the focus of this strategy – as part of a wider children and young people’s workforce with its own distinct values and principles but with a shared commitment to good outcomes for children and young people. We aim to:

  • Position playwork and the playwork approach as a distinct but integrated part of the children and young people’s workforce
  • Develop a suite of qualifications that are valued by employers and the workforce
  • Encourage high quality, accessible training opportunities

Objectives

Our objectives in 2011 – 2016 will be to:

1. Promote the playwork approach to be included within integrated workforce strategies
2. Provide processes to support the improvement of playwork learning and skills
3. Engage and inspire employers and practitioners to prioritise workforce development
4. Increase the uptake of playwork qualifications

Have your say

We are asking the playwork sector to feedback their views and opinions on the new vision, aims and objectives and the general direction of our work.

Take part in a short online questionnaire - responses to the consultation must be received by 9 April 2010

Consultation Events

We will be hosting a series of consultation events to allow play sector colleagues and other stakeholders the opportunity to feedback to us.
We want to hear the views of all those who work in children’s play, such as playworkers, employers and training providers.

Each event will take either AM or PM slots.

Consultation events will be taking place at the following places:
