Recruit into Coaching

The Recruit into Coaching Programme (RiC) is being implemented in partnership by Sport England and the Youth Sport Trust with support from sports coach UK and SkillsActive on behalf of the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS). RiC is part of the Coaching work strand of the PE & Sport Strategy for Young People (PESSYP) Delivery Plan as it is strongly linked to the School Sport Coaching Programme.

RiC LogoThe overarching aim of RiC is to recruit, train and deploy 10,000 new volunteer coaches by 2011.

5680 of the coaches will be delivered through the network of School Sport Partnerships (school settings) and 4320 through the network of County Sports Partnerships (community settings). The programme is being rolled out in the 70 most deprived wards in England only and this means that 28 out of the 49 CSPS are involved, with varying numbers in each region.

Objectives

  • To recruit and develop 10,000 volunteer coaches and deploy them to support sports activity by 5-19 year olds in local communities according to need.
  • Contribute to helping the 30% sporty segment move from 4 to 5 hours of sport a week; and the 50% semi-sporty segment move from 3 to 4 hours of sport a week.
  • Integrate the delivery of RiC into the wider PESSYP Coaching work strand and in line with the UK Coaching Framework; whilst increasing the availability of high quality coaching to young people in key sports at an early age to deliver the 5 hour sport offer.
