Janet, has been awarded £600 (specifically from the Nancy Ovens additional contribution) to visit Scottish Institute of Sport coach, Chris Martin at Stirling University in Scotland. Janet’s club has been working on the importance of swimming with good posture, swimming from the inside out.  She has been working closely with St. Bede’s coach Kevin Ayers who also works closely with Chris Martin. Janet has been invited to shadow Chris and learn about his work with swimmers in Scotland and their recent successes using these techniques.

Updates:

Janet will be shadowing Chris Martin at Stirling University at the end of November and is planning on developing her skills and furthering her understanding in the following areas:

  • Sports Science - A greater understanding of how sports science is used with High Performance Athletes; Testing, Analysing, Recording, Monitoring and how the information is used and fed back to the athletes.
  • Coaching philosophies - understanding the annual plan, cycles and sessions, the sets, percentages of energy systems used, typical volumes in each phase.  The comparisons between training the High Perfromance Senior Swimmer compared to a National/Regional Age Group Swimmer.
  • Technique - How the High Performance swimmer uses the techniques of swimming from the inside-out; how I can integrate these standards back at Hoddesdon S.C. with our Youth swimmers.
  • Hoddesdon Coaches - Everything learned I will bring back and present/share with the coaching team at Hoddesdon S.C. at our Coaching Development Meeting 4th December 2007.
  • Personal development - I hope to have a clearer understanding of the pathway for my development as a coach.  I am considering going to University for 3 years to get a BSc in Sports Studies, also start the UKCC Level 3.
