Smith, swim coach coaching junior athletes, was awarded the Nancy Ovens Bursary last summer to undertake a programme of coaching sessions with GB head swim coach Ian Turner at Loughborough University, primarily coaching the elite men’s squad. He was voted Nottinghamshire Coach of the Year 2006 at last weeks Nottingham County Council Sports Review, held at the East Midlands Conference Centre.
Talking after the event, Smith said: “I am delighted. I feel that the bursary has given me the opportunity to improve my coaching, and as a consequence this has been shown in the award on Tuesday evening.
“Not only is this a great honour for me personally but for the swimmers, parents and administrators of the scheme in Mansfield, and I would like to thank the Nancy Ovens Trust for the support the bursary has given me over the past six months.”
Stephen Studd, SkillsActive’s chief executive said: “This is fantastic news for Glenn. We are delighted that his hard work, determination and dedication have been recognised and rewarded.
“When the Nancy Ovens Trust asked us to sponsor a bursary we were keen to ensure it was linked to personal and, or professional development and I was delighted to see Glenn’s application. What he has been doing at Loughborough, with their head swim coach, is exactly the kind of development we were keen to sponsor. We are delighted for Glenn and wish him well for the future.”
