The funding secures SkillsActive’s position as the Sector Skills Council for playwork for at least three more years beginning May 2008.
Paul Bonel, Director of the playwork Unit at SkillsActive welcomes the DCMS funding: “It’s excellent news. With our funding next year from the DCSF already confirmed it means we can now start making steps towards putting our comprehensive work programmes into action for 2008-09.
The funding comes as a clear endorsement of SkillsActive’s role as the Sector Skills Council for the Playwork sector and recognises our track record as the organisation best placed to progress workforce development in out of school play settings.
As we continue to deliver our commitments to children’s play in the Children’s Plan, this has given us the security and a boost of confidence to play a key role in professionalising the workforce. Building on our work in setting standards, quality assuring training and qualifications, devising practical tools for employers and promoting activepassports for playworkers we will continue to improve the skills and knowledge of the playwork sector.
SkillsActive will continue to play a key role with Government in the development of an integrated children’s workforce, working closely with both DCMS and DCSF to take forward the Every Child Matters agenda.”
Stephen Studd, CEO of SkillsActive said: “This comes at an exciting time for Playwork and the launch of the Children’s Plan. This gives us the opportunity to ensure the unique contribution of play and playwork can be at the heart of the implementation of the Plan.”
