The meeting of the All Party Group at the House of Commons on Tuesday saw the two ministers outline the government’s commitment to play following the publication of the Children’s Plan and Fair Play, the consultation document on the play strategy.
The Chair of the APPG, Janet Dean MP, also accepted an activepassport for Playwork alongside the ministers, who met children and playworkers from St John’s Wood Adventure Playground after the APPG.
The activepassport for Playwork, administered by SkillsActive the Sector Skills Council for Active Leisure and Learning, is a unique web-based facility for recording skills, training, volunteering and qualifications to benefit both Playwork employees and employers.
Activepassport for Playwork has an integral role in professionalising the playwork workforce and meeting the objectives set out in the Children’s plan.
Secretary of State for Children, Schools and Families, Rt Hon Ed Balls MP said, "I’m determined to make sure all children – whatever their age – have access to safe and fun play areas and the right staff to help them. My department is working to professionalise the sector’s workforce and there is a clear link between that and the activepassport for Playwork so I was delighted to accept this passport from SkillsActive."
Paul Bonel, Head of Playwork at SkillsActive said, “It was a unique day in the Playwork calendar. To have both Ed Balls and Kevin Brennan address the APPG for play was fantastic and one really got a sense of how committed they are to play and Playwork. It was real pleasure to be able to offer them both an activepassport – a key feature in our work to up skill and professionalise the workforce – and I think they had a great time chatting with the children and parents from St John’s Wood Adventure Playground.”
With activepassport employees get a transferable record of achievements, which gives them mobility with the sector, helps to map and navigate a definitive career path and forms the basis of a personal development plan. Employers gain access to clear records of employees’ skills, helping to support recruitment selection and staff training.
