New SkillsActive Outdoors Employers Group assembles
The first meeting of the newly refreshed and expanded SkillsActive Outdoors Employers Group (OEG) has taken place at SkillsActive’s London headquarters.
Lee Rowberry, SkillsActive - 09/02/10
The OEG – consisting of 16 representatives from the UK outdoors sector – will play a key role in shaping SkillsActive’s work across the outdoors. Meeting on a quarterly basis, the OEG will tackle key issues facing the sector, including policy changes, qualifications and skills needs. Through SkillsActive, the group will help ensure government backing so that the future of the outdoors sector reflects the needs and demands of the people working in the industry.
Given the great interest and numbers wishing to join the OEG, a ‘virtual’ employers group has also been established to complement the meeting group. This additional group of 12 will receive all minutes and documentation associated with the OEG’s work and will be encouraged to input into the meetings.
Mark Lavington, HR manager for PGL Travel and OEG member, said: “The process of refreshing the OEG has been employer-led, representing the diversity in the outdoors sector and meeting the needs of today’s employment. I am delighted to be involved in the OEG and with SkillsActive – we value the synergy between PGL and SkillsActive.”
SkillsActive outdoors manager, Peter Thompson, says: “This first meeting was essentially an orientation day for the OEG. It was an opportunity to talk about the role of the group and to illustrate SkillsActive’s structure and how we work with employers in the active leisure, learning and well-being sector. We’re delighted that so many employers are keen to make this commitment to SkillsActive and to the outdoors sector’s development and future success.
“I also want to thank most sincerely those members of the outgoing OEG who have guided our work for many years. Some have stood down for a rest, and we are also delighted that five have decided to continue on with the new OEG.”
As part of their induction, the OEG were introduced to SkillsActive’s new outdoors strategic action plan, which makes reference to a diverse range of issues in the sector.
Being employer-led, SkillsActive operates an employers group for each of its sub-sectors. To find out how you could be a part of one of our employers groups, please contact Mike.Burrows@skillsactive.com.
