SkillsActive Scottish and Welsh election focus
Next month sees elections taking place across Scotland and Wales on 3 May. SkillsActive has looked at the policy commitments of the main parties fighting for votes across Scotland and Wales and highlighted the areas that will affect our sector.
Will Pickering, SkillsActive – 13/04/2007
There will be elections for each of the Scottish Parliament’s 73 constituencies, with a further 56 MSPs to be elected to represent Scotland’s eight electoral regions. 1,222 Scottish councillors will be elected across the country. In Wales, National Assembly elections are being held in 40 constituencies and 5 regions, which will result in 60 Assembly Members.
Elections are always an interesting time for those who follow the merry-go-round that is party politics but the May polls in Scotland and Wales are of particular interest as they could throw up some real surprises. How will the Conservative fare following their Cameron rebrand and what will the effect be on the Labour Party of voters knowing that the leader will change within the coming months? The Lib Dems have renewed confidence and the Nationalist parties are also confident of gaining extra seats in both Scotland and Wales.
From an employer point of view, all the parties have polices that could impact on our sector and the real work will begin once the electoral dust has settled and the new members take their seats in Holyrood and the Senedd.
