SkillsActive welcome funding boost for schools

SkillsActive have welcome the news that the government are providing more funding for out of hours activities

SkillsActive - 26/07/2007

According to the Secretary of State for Children, Familes and Schools Ed Balls, every child will be able to access breakfast clubs, out-of-hours tuition and after-school clubs in sport, music and drama with investment of more than £1billion in the extended schools programme over the next three years.

The full guidance published alongside the announcement outlines a varied menu of activities that primary and secondary schools could provide, they include "academically-focussed activities..homework clubs, arts and creative activities, sports activities and other recreational ativities, including play"

As the guidance clearly states that play should be considered as part of the core offer, SkillsActive hope that schools will ensure that some of the new money is used towards providing play opportunities for children across the England.
