One of the highlights of this year’s conference in Wales will see Welsh Heritage Minister Rhodri Glyn Thomas AM give a keynote address on ‘Climbing Higher’, the Welsh Assembly Government’s 20 year sport and physical activity strategy. He will outline the importance of a skilled workforce to ensure success and how this directly relates to sport, fitness and the outdoors.

The theme of this years one day Welsh conference, which is taking place on Thursday 8 May 2008 at Liberty Stadium in Swansea, is delivering ‘Climbing Higher’ and will consist of various speakers and workshops on issues affecting a range of areas from within the active leisure and learning sector.
The needs for sport and physical activity in Wales are identified in the government’s plans as:
- to be more physically active in order to be a healthier nation;
- healthy citizens to deliver long-term prosperity;
- to maximise the synergy between sport, physical activity and the natural environment;
- for its people to be more ‘physically literate’;
- more physically active communities and;
- as well as the success of individuals, Wales needs systematic and sustainable success in priority sports.
Mr Thomas is the Plaid Cymru Assembly Member for Carmarthen East and Dinefwr and was appointed Minister for Heritage last year.
He previously served on the Agriculture and Rural Affairs Committee and chaired the Culture Committee. Before entering full time politics he was Chair of CND Cymru and Welsh spokesperson for the Forum of Private Business. He has also served as a community councillor and chair of schools governors.
