SkillsActive’s complete Sector Qualifications Strategy rated ‘exemplar’

The Sector Qualifications Strategy for the Active Leisure and Learning Sector now encompasses all five sub sectors within the SkillsActive footprint and has been highly commended by the UK Commission for Employment and Skills.

Jessica Benson, SkillsActive - 07/04/08

This strategic document holds the complete sector vision for the future of qualifications and learning including driving and reviewing vocational qualifications and demand led provision of qualifications across all four UK nations and each sub sector.

The SQS for the active leisure and learning sector sets out a vision for a sustainable and high quality system of training, development and qualifications linked to occupational areas within the sector. The SQS will be one of the mechanisms to address the current and future skills and knowledge requirements of the sector’s workforce and will influence funding bodies across the UK in the distribution of public funds to support the delivery of accredited qualifications. John Thorpe, head of the technical unit said:

“The full SQS now means that the current range of qualifications and training in the sector is less complex and confusing and tailors more to the appropriate skills and knowledge employers require. SkillsActive has worked with its partner organisations to develop a vision to ensure there are vocational qualifications and training that are ‘fit for purpose’ and future provision that can provide the skills, knowledge, behaviours and values that the sector needs. We have our finger firmly on the pulse in terms of developing and delivering qualifications which meet the skills needs of the sector.”

The sector will continue to develop and revise national standards for the range of occupational areas within the sector and these will provide the basis for the development and review of qualifications and training now and in the future. It is hoped the strategy will ultimately engage more people in work related qualifications.
