SkillsActive and the Nancy Ovens Trust expect applicants to create and tailor their training to develop new and improved skills for use in their current role.
Previous successful applicants have used the bursary to take their careers to a new level by working with highly experienced individuals in their field, such as elite coaches, or by gaining experience in a new industry setting.
All training should be undertaken outside of an individual’s day to day role.

Nancy Ovens MBE was a board member of SkillsActive’s predecessor organisation SPRITO and an enthusiastic supporter of education, training and skills development in the sector. Nancy championed work-based skills development in sport and leisure and helped make major improvements to services.
Nancy’s family, friends and colleagues established the Nancy Ovens Trust after she passed away to celebrate her work with young people.

I have worked in the Health and Leisure Sector for over 15 years and have extensive experience in the development of education and training for health club operators and independent training providers.
I am a qualified tutor, assessor and internal verifier and have practiced in all areas over the past 15 years both for large chain operators and training providers.
I was the head of education and training for David Lloyd Leisure in both the UK and Europe and at the same time became a consultant for Skills Active on their SAFE committee and worked closely with TEG in the development of Level 2 and Level 3 units.
I have worked with various awarding bodies and training providers in the development of courses and units and continue this work on a regular basis. I am also a member of the Skills Active Endorsement panel.
I have recently written and had accredited a Level 4 Qualification in physical activity for adults with obesity, diabetes Mellitus, and/or metabolic syndrome. This is the first accredited Level 4 qualification in this area in the UK and is being utilised by CYQ.
I was the only private sector representative in the IRAS debate and trial on behalf of DLL working closely with Skills Active and the QCA.
I continue to evaluate and quality assure CPD courses and qualifications on a regular basis, develop and write units of education with Skills Active and awarding bodies and training providers. I am also an independent consultant working with a variety of training providers to support them with the development of their courses at levels 1-4.
