SIC and SOC codes explained

Official statistics

Official statistics are analysed using:

  • Standard Industrial Classification (SIC)
  • Standard Occupational Classification (SOC)

Government sponsored surveys that SkillsActive can analyse include:

  • British Register of Employer Surveys (BRES)
  • Labour Force Survey (LFS)
  • Population statistics
  • Annual Survey of Hours and Earnings (ASHE)
  • The Health Survey
  • UK ESS from 2011

Sector SIC codes

The sector is not been well-defined using Standard Industrial Classifications, and although the new SIC codes introduced in 2007 include new codes for sport and recreation education, and for sports clubs and fitness facilities, it is still not perfect. In many cases we cannot distinguish between Sport and recreation, Health and fitness and the Outdoors because of small sample sizes. Additionally, “own account” (freelance) fitness instructors to Sports and recreation education rather than Fitness facilities

The SIC code for Caravan Parks has adopted the American term of “trailer parks” who may self-classify into Holiday centres and villages instead.  SkillsActive would prefer them to be coded under 55.3 Camping grounds, recreational vehicle parks and trailer parks.

There is still no SIC code that adequately covers the Playwork subsector, so SkillsActive will base its analysis on SOC 6123 Playgroup leaders and assistants as a proxy for Playwork.

SIC 2007 Codes

SIC codes are defined at broad level using 1 or 2-digits to define them. For more detailed activities 3, 4 or even 5-digits are needed to define the activity. As the definition becomes more refined, its usefulness can be limited because the sample sizes are smaller, and not all data sources can be accessed using more detailed classifications. For country or regional analysis, we often have to combine SIC codes to be able to report on them.
