Higher Education Endorsement for Sports Coach Education

Higher Education Endorsement for Sports Coach Education

Sports Coaching can be a highly professional and specialised career option, requiring significant intellectual expertise, good decision making skills and well developed communication abilities.  Many degree courses in sports coach education more than adequately cover the knowledge and subject matter required to understand what to coach, but it is also important to ensure that enough practical experience of coaching is included in graduate level qualifications.  Much research indicates that sports coaches learn and develop significantly from undertaking and reflecting on practical experiences and an effective degree course in sports coach education should integrate the intellectual and practical elements of sports coaching in a cohesive and coherent curriculum.

Higher Education Endorsement subsequently not only allows Higher Education Institutions delivering a degree in sports coach education to identify their programmes of study as high quality courses with relevance to the industry today, but it also ensures that students receive a well founded education in sports coaching.  It also directly links students to potential employment opportunities through intrinsically delivering practical experience and work with employers in the field into the course.  Sports Coaching in the UK is guided by the UK Coaching Framework and Higher Education Endorsement is a key part of the aim to develop a world-leading coaching system in the UK.

The benefits of Higher Education Endorsement for Sports Coach Education include:

  • Endorsement is awarded both by SkillsActive, the Sector Skills Council for Active Leisure, Learning and Well-being, and Sports Coach UK, the National Coaching Agency.
  • Higher Education Institutions can demonstrate to employers and students that their course has been recognised by the industry as containing a large practical element and includes higher level academic coaching content.
  • Improved links can be forged between students, employers and Higher Education Institutions through a high proportion of coaching placements throughout the course.
  • Students can easily identify courses that have a guaranteed minimum of 150 hours of practical coaching experience.
