SkillsActive has recently undertaken an audit of the training and development opportunities that are available within the Sport, Fitness, Playwork, Outdoors, and Caravans sector across Wales.
Based upon a confidential survey, and as part of this work, we have developed a directory of training provision. This can act as a tool for providing employers with the details of appropriate providers that may be well placed to help address specific skills gaps and shortages within the workplace.
It is important to state that the training directory will include provision that is both accredited and non-accredited. Therefore, and as the Sector Skills Council for Active Leisure, Learning and Well-Being, SkillsActive is not in a position to endorse the provision that has been identified. SkillsActive would urge interested parties to explore quality assurance with the provider direct before investing in any training and development.

Somerset Leisure’s Mission and Vision as a Trust is to provide excellent sports, health & well-being, leisure and learning services that are accessible, responsive and sustainable to ensure the South West is a healthy and vibrant place to live, work and visit.
As a lead employer in the area we have brought together an exceptionally strong and broad based consortium of delivery partners who are able to meet all the development needs of employers, individuals, volunteers and young people entering the active leisure sector.
We have a proven track record in delivery of learning solutions for Sports Development and Leisure Operations as well as continuous professional development for clubs and coaches.
The partners use government funding, where that is appropriate and available, to meet the needs of employers and individuals. For example, Train to Gain funds can be accessed to support people in work who have not obtained relevant qualifications and European Social Funds are available to help people enter employment in the sector.
We have a creative suite of training opportunities that offer learning solutions for employers as well as support for leisure centres in obtaining QUEST accreditation.
We deliver apprenticeship programmes, tailored courses to meet employer needs. We aim to be cost effective and deliver in the workplace or club wherever possible.
Somerset Activity and Sports Partnership
SASP is Somerset's County Sports Partnership and the county's leading sports development agency. SASP is one of the region’s major employers of sports coaches and a lead organisation in the South West for coaching in the curriculum and extended schools provision. SASP has a proven track record in training adults through sport and activity across a wide and diverse range of areas - from inclusion and early years to performance sport, safeguarding and health development. All programmes are employer led and cost effective. National awards for partnership working within different sports have also been achieved by SASP.
SASP's main purpose is to assist Sport England in building the foundations of sporting success through a world leading community sports system. This will be a key element of the 2012 Olympic Legacy which aims to achieve the target of 1,000,000 more adults taking part in sport by 2012/13 and 80% of young people accessing 5 hours of sport per week.
SASP is contributing towards this target in Somerset by providing high quality sports and physical activity opportunities to children and young people across Somerset . SASP also provides effective support to clubs in terms of training coaches, officials and volunteers, quality assurance and accessing funding opportunities.
The strength of The Castle School lies in the remarkable breadth of its achievements. Castle’s last OFSTED inspection concluded that ‘This is an outstanding school’. It maintains the many areas of excellence reported at the last inspection. It has subsequently improved its performance highly successfully....' Yet it is not only in the academic areas nor upon our examination results, excellent though they are year on year, that we base our belief that the school is exceptional. The extraordinary achievements of our students in sports…and in their significant contribution to the community, add vital ingredients to make this school special. These achievements have gained awards locally, nationally and from Government Departments.
The school offers specialisms in Sport, Applied Learning and Leading Edge which have all made a significant impact on achievement and high quality teaching and learning. Castle’s most recent development is the extension of the age range of the school which includes the building of a new £2.5 million 6th form called the Qdos (Qualifications in the Development of Sport) Centre. Post 16 provision will primarily focus on sports and active leisure developments.
