Northern Ireland
SkillsActive has an established committee in Northern Ireland led by employers, with representation from national agencies, partner organisations and training providers. We also work in partnership with sector groups in playwork and fitness and are building regional employer networks across the country.
Our role
Our role is to ensure the full involvement of Northern Ireland employers in the sector at a UK level. We aim to provide a focus for active leisure and learning employers across the province who want to work together to identify and address their organisation’s skills requirements.
Profile of the sector in Northern Ireland
The Northern Ireland economy is made up of approximately 99% of business employing fewer than 50 people, with 93% in the category of micro business.
24% of the adult population in Northern Ireland performed at the lowest level of literacy competence, 19% of those in employment are at level 1, 28% at level 2, 27% economically inactive, 23% with no qualifications (compared to 13% rest of UK) and 15% hold degrees (compared to 18% rest of UK).
Approximately 3% of the workforce is employed on the active leisure and learning sector.
28% of employers in the active leisure and learning sector in Northern Ireland report that they have had hard-to-fill vacancies.27% of employers report that they are planning major investment in their business over the next year.
Sector Skills Agreement for Northern Ireland
SkillsActive, in partnership with a number of professional bodies and government offices, has undertaken extensive consultation with employers and training providers in Northern Ireland to discover the skills gaps and shortages for the country. The result of this consultation have formed part of SkillsActive’s Sector Skills Agreement for Northern Ireland, and has resulted in an action plan detailing how SkillsActive, in partnership with key sector bodies, will address the skills needs of the workforce in Northern Ireland.
