The training elements of the Apprenticeship are government funded, through the Learning and Skills Council, and to complete a full framework, individuals would achieve an NVQ, technical certificates, key skills and additional employer requirements.

Apprenticeships in the active leisure and learning sector have been designed to present opportunities for young people aged 16-25 to develop a mix of practical and technical skills that will allow them to both develop at work and, where applicable, progress to higher education.

Apprenticeships are the current government’s flagship programme for entering the workforce in all sectors and apprentices learn on the job, building up knowledge and skills, gaining qualifications and earning money at the same time. There are different levels of the Apprenticeship available, but they all lead to a NVQs, key skill qualifications and a range of technical certificates which give the underpinning knowledge necessary to achieve the NVQ and allow for broader learning and development opportunities.

Which Apprenticeship and choice of NVQ is right for an individual will depend on their experience and the role being undertaken. The range of available level 2 NVQs cover career pathways in coaching, instructing fitness, operations, playwork, sports development, spectator control and activity leadership. Progression onto an Advanced Apprenticeship framework allows access to higher level training in operations and development, playwork, instructing physical activity and exercise, coaching and outdoor education.

There are no set entry requirements for the programmes but interested employers and providers will need to ensure that the young person has the potential to achieve the different components and be working at the right level and across the correct range of activities in the workplace.
