Health & fitness endorsement

Endorsement of training in the health and fitness industry is undertaken by the Register of Exercise Professionals (REPs).

What is the Register of Exercise Professionals?

The Register of Exercise Profesionals has been set up to help safeguard the health and interests of people who are using the services of exercise and fitness instructors, teachers and trainers.

The Register uses a process of self-regulation that recognises industry-based qualifications, practical competency, and requires fitness professionals to work within a Code of Ethical Practice. Members of the Register are given a card and registration certificate to prove their qualification and membership.

Also known as REPs, it operates in the UK and across the world to recognise personal achievement and competencies of qualified fitness professionals.

Endorsed Training for REPs

One of the principles of REPs is continuous professional development (CPD). Keeping ones skills and knowledge up-to-date and developing as a professional through continuing professional development, is a key aspect of any established or emerging profession.

Continuous professional development for REPs is known as 'endorsed training' for CPD. In order to maintain their status on the Register instructors need to undergo training or developmental activities on an annual basis. The Register’s CPD requirements are based around a system of CPD credits. Each training course or developmental activity which achieves endorsed training status is given a CPD credit value.

The SkillsActive exercise and fitness technical expert group (TEG) has established a system of formal evaluation of training courses which are submitted for endorsed training status. This system involves the submission and evaluation of individual training courses which are evaluated against agreed criteria. The submission process involves completing the endorsed training checklist, providing a summary sheet of national occupational standards and submitting the course manuals or materials for evaluation by an independent expert.

REPs is always looking for suitable courses to be recognised for continuous professional development for its members. If you are or are planning to offer training related to exercise and fitness and wish the course to be endorsed, please download the submission packs and the Code of Ethical Practice below.

Training Provider Licences

The TEG recognises that there are some large, well established training providers in the fitness industry who may be better served through the awarding of a Training Provider License which allows for the training provider to develop and deliver training courses which are recognised as endorsed training for CPD which do not have to be submitted to the TEG on an individual basis.

A licensing system has been developed to ensure that recognised training providers who have met certain criteria will not be overburdened by the submission of individual courses for approval and will be better able to respond to the ever-evolving needs of the fitness industry in a timely manner.

If you offer a number of training courses on a regular basis, related to exercise and fitness and are quality assured by an external bodies e.g. QCA recognised awarding body, you may wish to be considered as a licensed provider for endorsed training. Please download the application forms and the Code of Practice for training providers below.
