Sport and Active Leisure Diploma

SkillsActive started development of the Sport and Active Leisure line of learning in January 2007. The Diploma in Sport and Active Leisure is in the third phase of diplomas being introduced and will be available for delivery from September 2010.

Introduction to The Diploma in Sport and Active Leisure

Currently in the second year of development, the Diploma in Sport and Active Leisure will be available for first teaching from September 2010.

The Diploma in Sport and Active Leisure will provide students with knowledge and understanding of the sport and active leisure industry. The Diploma combines both theory and hands on experience that gives students the opportunity to gain a fully rounded education through a number of learning methods within the environments of both the classroom and the workplace.

The development of this Diploma will assist the sport and active leisure industry by providing well rounded future employees, who will be well informed about the sector upon employment or further education.

Potential students interested in taking the Diploma in Sport and Active Leisure do not necessarily have to be active participants, although they should have the strongest possible interest in the industry, whilst also be able to understand and relate to leading an active and healthy lifestyle.

The Diploma will be taught at three levels; foundation, higher and advanced. Each level incorporating principal learning based on developing the skills and knowledge of the sport and active leisure industry, generic learning based on fundamental teachings in English, Maths, ICT, Additional and Specialist learning to focus study on a particular topic within the industry in more depth. The Diploma also incorporates a minimum of 10 days experience of work, wherein students have the opportunity to gain work-relevant skills.

Diploma Update

Work has now begun on qualification criteria development and awarding bodies are beginning to develop qualifications covering the principal learning component of the diploma.

A Diploma Development Partnership(DDP) has been formed to undertake the development. This partnership is made up of employers, sector skills councils (SSCs),sector skills bodies ( SSBs), higher education (HE), further education (FE), training providers, awarding bodies, schools and key stakeholder professional bodies such as the Youth Sport Trust (YST), led by SkillsActive as the convening SSC.

Line of Learning

The Diploma Development Partnership (DDP) for Sport and Active Leisure announce the publication of the final Line of Learning Statement for Sport and Active Leisure.

This document outlines the vision for the Diploma in Sport and Active Leisure and is the result of extensive research with a wide range of employers nationally, higher education, further education, schools and other interested groups. The Qualifications and Curriculum Authority (QCA) will be consulting on the Line of Learning Criteria during May and June 2008 which may result in changes being made to the Line of Learning Statement following this consultation. A final version of the Line of Learning Statement will therefore appear here by 31 July 2008.

A line of learning statement is a detailed document written and owned by the relevant Diploma Development Partnership for a particular line of learning that outlines the rationale, vision and content at  foundation, higher and advanced levels  that should be contained as part of the Principal Learning component within the Diploma qualification.  This document is intended to inform and guide the development of the line of learning Criteria.
